THEORY RADAR — after chapter 1197. Chapter 1197 came out on 2 November (our chapter report). By the afternoon, most Japanese reviews had already decided: Sanji has awakened Conqueror's Haki.

We went back to the chapter to check their reasons. Some hold up. One doesn't. And the most interesting detail of the week isn't in the fight at all. It's on Zoro's shirt.

Evidence layers.

  • Chapter 1197 is PRIMARY — MANGA VERIFIED, read directly on Shonen Jump+, title page included.
  • Japanese readings are quoted as readings, with their sources, all published after the chapter's release.
  • Leak-derived posts are excluded, including one page dated before the chapter came out.

Scores rate how well each reading is supported, not how likely it feels. The rubric is set out in our first Theory Radar.

How Japan is reading 1197

We read five Japanese reviews and one roundup of posts on X, all published on release day.

  • All five reviews call it Conqueror's Haki. Most say so in the headline.
  • The roundup of X posts is more careful. Its headline ends in a question mark.
  • None of them says it was not Conqueror's Haki. The closest is one blog that admits the last kick doesn't look like it.

The reasons they give:

  1. The armour rule. Killingham says only Conqueror's Haki can break his Omen armour. Then it breaks.
  2. The healing. His regeneration slows, and he suspects Conqueror's Haki himself.
  3. Black lightning. Two reviews say it is drawn on Sanji's leg.
  4. Sanji's change of heart. The love is defence lesson is read as the trigger.

A — Did the last kick carry Conqueror's Haki?

ABYSS CURRENT RADAR

Sanji's last kick carried Conqueror's Haki

6/10
Evidence7/10On the page: Killingham says only Conqueror's Haki can break his Omen armour, his healing slows, and his helmet shatters. Also on the page: Sanji calls it Armament, and we found no black lightning drawn on his leg.
Independent signals8/10Four separate details point the same way: the armour rule, the slowed healing, Killingham's own suspicion, and Gaban's line in 1195 that the aptitude should be there.
Assumption loadMEDIUMThat the helmet counts as the armour, and that an enemy's rule is the story's rule.
ContradictionsMEDIUMSanji's own word is 'Armament beyond all limits', and nobody on the page names Conqueror's Haki as fact.

What the page gives (PRIMARY, 1197):

  • Killingham's suspicion. His healing is clearly slow, he thinks, and Sanji hasn't noticed. Surely he isn't coating it, just a little? The thought ends on the word 〝覇王色〟.
  • Killingham's rule. 「この〝魔気の鎧〟を壊せるのは… 〝覇王色〟だけだ」 — only Conqueror's Haki can break this Omen armour.
  • The result. His spear's head breaks apart. Sanji's last kick shatters his helmet.

What pushes back, also on the page:

  • Sanji's own words. Mid-fight he thinks that plain Armament is too soft: 「〝武装〟なんざ生ぬるい…!!」. At the end he names what he reached: 〝度を超えた武装色〟, Armament Haki beyond all limits.
  • No black lightning, as far as we can see. Oda draws Conqueror's Haki coating as black lightning. We went back through every fight page looking for it on Sanji's leg and didn't find it. The jagged black lines in the last kick look to us like the ground splitting, drawn the same way as the crack on the page before. That is our reading of the art, and two Japanese reviews read it differently.
  • Helmet, not armour. The chapter shows the helmet breaking. It doesn't say whether the armour as a whole is broken.

Score: 6/10. Strong signals, and the chapter is clearly built to make readers ask. But the only person who names Conqueror's Haki is an enemy guessing, and the hero calls it something else.

Where this leaves the earlier score. Before the chapter, our pre-1197 Radar gave "Sanji awakens Conqueror's Haki in 1197" 6 out of 10. It stays at 6. The signs moved in its favour, and the confirmation didn't come.

B — Is the sword-and-shield line hidden on Zoro's shirt?

ABYSS CURRENT RADAR

Zoro's shirt on the title page answers Sanji's sword-and-shield line

6/10
Evidence7/10The shirt text is on the page and is real Old Irish: a line about a battle-shield and a sword, from the hymn known in English as 'Be Thou My Vision'. The link to Sanji's line is a reading.
Independent signals4/10One detail, first pointed out by one Japanese blog. We confirmed the text ourselves.
Assumption loadLOWOnly that the shirt was lettered with this chapter in mind.
ContradictionsLOWNothing on the page argues against it.

What the page gives (PRIMARY, title page). The colour-request title page shows Zoro laughing, in a T-shirt with three lines of lettering:

Is tú mo chathsciath, rop tú mo chlaideb

It's Old Irish. It comes from 「Rop tú mo baile」, the medieval Irish poem behind the hymn Be Thou My Vision. Word by word:

  • cathsciath — battle-shield
  • claideb — sword
  • In plain English: you are my battle-shield; be my sword.

Why it matters. The same chapter ends with Sanji's line to Zoro: you be Luffy's sword, I'll be his shield. The magazine's closing caption calls it the resolve of the two wings.

Who spotted it. The Japanese blog SaltyDog pointed out the shirt and linked it to Sanji's line. We read the shirt on the page ourselves and checked the Old Irish.

Illustration: Luffy in his straw hat seen from behind on a cliff at dawn, grinning over his shoulder; Zoro, left eye closed, draws a glowing katana on one side, and Sanji raises a fiery leg like a round shield on the other, with two faint wings of light behind them.
Sword and shield, the reading Japanese reviews call the two wings. Our illustration, not a panel from the manga. Artwork: ABYSS CURRENT

How Japanese reviews read the two wings:

  • Zoro is the attack that opens the way for Luffy.
  • Sanji is the defence that protects him.
  • One review puts it as the two wings finally lining up on either side of Luffy.

What pushes back: nothing on the page, only the usual question of how much to read into Zoro's shirts. Oda has put lettering on them for years, and not every line is a message.

Score: 6/10. The text is real and the match is exact: a battle-shield and a sword, in the chapter that ends on a sword and a shield. Whether it was planned is the one step we can't check.

C — Is Killingham finished?

ABYSS CURRENT RADAR

Killingham gets back up in chapter 1198

5/10
Evidence6/10God's Knights regenerate. His healing is shown slowing, not stopping. Only the helmet is shown breaking, and the chapter ends on the kick.
Independent signals5/10One Japanese review doubts his heart was hit. Others already call him beaten.
Assumption loadMEDIUMThat the fight isn't settled off-page at the start of 1198.
ContradictionsMEDIUMThe chapter is built like a finish: the 'shield' line lands with the final kick.

What the page gives (PRIMARY, 1197):

  • His healing slows. It doesn't stop.
  • The last kick breaks his helmet, and the ground splits.
  • The chapter ends there. We don't see him fall, and we don't see him get up.
Illustration: a huge black-armoured knight with long black hair lies grinning in rubble in the rain, his helmet shattered and his spear snapped, one hand pushing at the ground; far behind, a blond man in a black suit stands smoking.
Is he finished? 1197 doesn't say. Our illustration, not a panel from the manga. Artwork: ABYSS CURRENT

How Japanese readers split:

  • "Beaten." At least one review's headline already calls it a win for Sanji.
  • "Not yet." One review asks whether his heart was actually hit. If God's Knights can keep regenerating, a broken helmet may not be the end.

What pushes back: the chapter is built like a finish. Sanji's "shield" line lands on the same kick, and the closing caption sums up the fight.

Score: 5/10. Regeneration is established, and the result isn't shown. The ending reads like a finish, though, and Oda can close a fight in a single panel of 1198.

How the God's Knights can be beaten: God's Knights, member by member.

D — Does the title page show Zoro awakening first?

ABYSS CURRENT RADAR

Adult Zoro and child Sanji on the title page mean Zoro awakened first

1/10
Evidence3/10The picture is real. The meaning is read into it.
Independent signals3/10One blog.
Assumption loadMEDIUMThat the title page comments on the chapter at all.
ContradictionsHIGHThe page credits the scene to a reader's request: Zoro laughing at Sanji after Bonney's power turned him into a child.

The reading. One Japanese blog reads the title page as a comment on the fight. Zoro is drawn as an adult and Sanji as a child, because Zoro's Conqueror's Haki came first.

What the page says. The caption on the title page credits the idea to a reader, with their pen name. The request: Zoro laughing his head off at Sanji, turned into a child by Bonney's power. That's the Egghead joke from Bonney's age-changing fruit, and the reader asked for exactly that.

Score: 1/10. The scene was a reader's idea, not a comment on chapter 1197.

Why B scores higher from the same page. The reader asked for the scene. The lettering on Zoro's shirt wasn't part of the request.

What we left out

  • "A new flame." Two pages say Sanji's leg carries a new kind of fire, beyond Ifrit Jambe. One is dated before the chapter came out, so it is leak-based. The other gives no page to point to. On the page, the techniques named are Ifrit Jambe and a new kick, 〝首肉要塞〟, Collier Fortress.
  • "Sommers is beaten too." The same pre-release page says so. 1197 doesn't show Zoro's fight at all.
  • A Robin quote about "the Pirate King's two wings". It is being shared on X as a line from an earlier chapter. We couldn't check it for this edition, so it's not used.

What 1198 has to answer

ONE PIECE is in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 50, on sale 9 November. Shonen Jump+ has been posting new issues at 00:00 Japan time.

  1. Does Killingham get up? That decides C.
  2. Does anyone say "Conqueror's Haki" about Sanji, and mean it? That decides A.
  3. Zoro vs Sommers. Still no result from chapter 1195.
  4. Does Zoro answer the sword-and-shield line? That would be the strongest support B can get.
