Privacy Policy

Last updated 31 August 2026

ABYSS CURRENT is an independent publication. We do not sell anything on this site, we have no accounts to sign up for, and we ask for nothing about you. What this policy describes is the small amount of data collected automatically when you read a page, and who else sees it.

What we collect

We do not operate accounts, logins, newsletters, comment sections or contact forms, so we never ask you for a name, an email address or any other detail about yourself. If you choose to email us, we hold that message and your address only for as long as it takes to answer you.

Everything else is collected automatically by our analytics provider as you browse: which pages you opened, when, roughly where in the world you were (country or city level, derived from your IP address), which site or search brought you here, and the general characteristics of your device and browser. None of it identifies you by name, and we make no attempt to work out who any individual reader is.

Google Analytics 4

This site uses Google Analytics 4, a service provided by Google. It is the only analytics tool we run. When you open a page, the Google Analytics script loads and reports the page view to Google, who process it on our behalf and show us aggregate reports — how many people read a piece, which sections hold attention, which articles find no audience at all.

We use those reports for one purpose: deciding what to write next and how to make the site better. We do not use them to build profiles of readers, and we do not combine them with anything else.

Cookies and similar identifiers

Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser — principally _ga and _ga_* — which hold a randomly generated identifier so that repeat visits from the same browser are counted as one reader rather than several. That identifier is not linked to any information you have given us, because you have not given us any.

ABYSS CURRENT itself sets no cookies of its own and stores nothing in your browser's local or session storage.

You can block or delete these cookies in your browser settings at any time. The site works normally without them; we simply stop counting you. Google also publishes a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics everywhere.

Data shared with third parties

Google is the only third party that receives data about your visit. What reaches them is what any web request carries — your IP address, the page you requested, your browser and device details — plus the analytics identifier described above. Google acts as our data processor for analytics and may process this data on servers outside your country.

Google explains what it does with this data, and how you can control it, in How Google uses data when you use our partners' sites or apps.

Some articles embed video from YouTube. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced domain, which does not set tracking cookies until you actually press play; from the moment you do, YouTube's own terms and privacy policy apply to that playback. Links out to other sites are just links — once you follow one, that site's policy governs, not ours.

We do not sell, rent or trade data about our readers, and we never will.

Why we collect it

Only two reasons: to understand which of our articles are read, and to improve the site — its speed, its structure and its editorial direction. We do not use this data for advertising, personalisation or any automated decision about you.

Advertising

ABYSS CURRENT currently carries no advertising. No ad network is loaded, no ad code runs, and no ad cookies are set.

We may introduce advertising in future. If we do, we will update this policy before any ads appear — naming the networks involved, the cookies and identifiers they use, and how to opt out. Where consent is required for personalised advertising, we will ask for it first.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. Material changes — a new service that collects data, advertising arriving — are made here before the change goes live, not after.
