About ABYSS CURRENT
ABYSS CURRENT reports on what is moving beneath the surface of Japanese culture — manga and the theories built around it, rumors circulating in Japanese-language spaces, convenience-store snacks and products that never leave the country. Written in English, for readers outside Japan.
Most of what we cover starts in Japanese and stays there. Our job is to find it, read it properly, and carry it out — with the original sources attached.
Editorial policy
Every article carries a source/status label so you always know what you are reading. Speculation is never formatted like confirmed reporting.
- OFFICIAL
- Confirmed by an official source such as a publisher, studio or manufacturer.
- MANGA FACT
- Stated in the published manga itself. Canon, not interpretation.
- JP THEORY
- A fan theory circulating in Japanese-language communities. Speculation, not confirmed information.
- RUMOR
- Unverified claim from an unofficial source. Treat as unconfirmed until an official announcement.
- OUR TAKE
- Editorial opinion and analysis by our editorial team.
On Japanese-language sources
When we cover a theory or rumor that started in Japanese, we summarise the argument in our own words, link the original discussion, compare competing readings and add our own analysis. We do not republish other people's text, translations, video scripts or scans.
We also check them. A theory tells us what someone argued and when; it is not evidence for what the manga contains. Claims about the source material are verified against the published chapters and official material, in that order, and secondary summaries are cited only as proof that an argument was made. When a check goes against a popular theory, we say so and lower our own rating for it — that is the part most retellings leave out.
Visuals
Visuals on ABYSS CURRENT may include original artwork, original diagrams, embedded source material, and limited source excerpts used for reporting, criticism, analysis or verification. We identify sources and rights holders where appropriate, and we distinguish source material from our own editorial graphics.
Where the point is what someone else published, we prefer to embed the original rather than copy a still out of it — the reader gets the source itself, on the rights holder's own player.
