Quick answer

Imu is the hidden ruler of the World Government — the one who sits on the Empty Throne, the seat the world is told nobody occupies.

What the manga has confirmed:

  • The name. Chapter 1179's caption calls Imu 「世界の王 ネロナ・イム聖」 — King of the World, Saint Nerona Imu — one of the "First Twenty" who created the World Government.
  • The power over people. Through the God's Knights' covenant, Imu can take over the people who signed it, and did so on Elbaf.
  • Imu in person. Since chapter 1179, Imu has been on Elbaf in their own body, fighting Luffy, Loki and the giants.

What it hasn't: what Imu actually is, how Imu has lived for some 800 years, and what Imu wants with Joy Boy, Vivi or "Lili".

Evidence layers.

  • Everything below is CHAPTER-REFERENCED: each point is given in at least two independent post-release reviews (sources at the foot of the page). Where only one source says something, we say so.
  • No leak sites. Pre-release "confirmed spoiler" posts are excluded.
  • Pronouns. The manga hasn't stated Imu's gender, so we use "Imu" and "they".

The Empty Throne (906–908)

The first look (906). A silhouette deep inside Mary Geoise stands before a colossal straw hat kept frozen in a cold room. The chapter doesn't name the figure.

The throne (908).

  • The seat. At the Reverie, the figure takes the Empty Throne — the symbol that the twenty founding kings rule as equals and none of them as king.
  • The Five Elders kneel. They ask whether there is another "light" to be erased from history.

The flower room (908):

  • Slashed. The wanted posters of Luffy and Blackbeard.
  • Pinned with a sword. A photo of Shirahoshi.
  • Kept. A photo of Vivi — not cut. Imu takes it to the throne.

Lulusia and the Mother Flame (1060, 1086)

  • 1060. Sabo is reporting what he saw at the Reverie and breaks off at the throne. Then Lulusia Kingdom is wiped out by an attack from the sky, and the Five Elders say there was never such a country.
  • 1086. The weapon is named Mother Flame, and the chapter shows the target was picked because it was close.

Whether the weapon is Uranus — one of the Ancient Weapons — is a popular reading. The manga hasn't said so.

The name: Nerona Imu (1085–1086, confirmed 1179)

1085 — Cobra. Cobra is killed at Mary Geoise. Before that, Imu questions him about the letter, and Cobra names its writer: Nefertari D. Lili. More on her: who is Lily?

1086 — Ivankov's line. Far from the Holy Land, Ivankov says that among the original twenty kings was a Saint Imu of the Nerona family.

  • Then: a link readers drew, not a statement. Nobody on the page said this Imu is the one on the throne.

1179 — confirmed. The chapter is titled 「ネロナ・イム降臨」 — Nerona Imu descends. Imu's caption reads:

  • 「世界の王 ネロナ・イム聖」 — King of the World, Saint Nerona Imu;
  • one of the "First Twenty", the creators of the World Government.

Egghead: Joy Boy and Saturn (1122, 1125)

  • 1122. At Egghead, Emet releases Joy Boy's Haki. In the flower room, Imu reacts in pain and screams "Joy Boy!!!"
  • 1125. Imu purges Saturn, one of the Five Elders, without being there. Garling Figarland takes his place.

Elbaf: the covenant and Domi Reversi (1149–1178)

Gunko (1149–1150).

  • The takeover. At the end of 1149, Imu seizes Gunko's will and speaks through her.
  • Conqueror's Haki (1150). Imu releases it through her body.
  • Domi Reversi. 1150 names the power 黒転支配 (Domi Reversi). With it and a devil's contract, Imu turns Dorry and Brogy into weapons.

Full record: who is Gunko?

The covenant (1167–1170).

  • The Abyss. The God's Knights carry a five-pointed mark, the Abyss.
  • Three depths. Their contracts come in three depths: shallow, deep and deepest sea. The deeper the contract, the more Imu can reach.
  • Harald. Elbaf's king joined the Knights when Shanks vanished, signed a deep contract, and was taken over by Imu fourteen years ago. What happened next: Loki's Devil Fruit.

Every member and their contract: who are the God's Knights?

Frozen (1178).

  • The ice. Loki's Ragnir freezes Imu inside Gunko's body.
  • The escape. Imu slips out and tries Domi Reversi on Luffy and Loki. It doesn't work.
  • The decision. Imu says they will leave the castle.

Imu in person (1179–1193)

1179. The Five Elders try desperately to stop Imu leaving the Holy Land. Imu goes anyway, and appears on Elbaf in their own body — and coughs up blood.

The fight, in short:

  • 1180 — Omen. Imu revives and strengthens Sommers and Killingham with black flames — 魔気, Omen, the chapter's title.
  • 1181 — Nemesis. Imu fights Loki with a sword called 天罰剣 (Nemesis). A flashback shows Imu with Joy Boy, and Imu says "So you've come back…"
  • 1191 — the second form. Luffy, Loki and Hajrudin hit Imu with a three-man version of the giants' Hakoku, 三将轟国. Imu changes form again. What made it possible?
  • 1192 — the swords. 混沌剣 (Tōfū) and 虚無剣 (Bōfū), which merge into the shield 空虚の盾. Luffy and Loki break it. Full report · what the names mean
  • 1193 — Adam. A blow from Luffy and Loki sends Imu into the treasure tree Adam.
Illustration: Luffy, fist crackling with white lightning, and the giant Loki with a frost-covered hammer strike a dark figure wreathed in black flames toward a colossal tree.

Since then: chapters 1194–1196 follow Zoro and then Sanji. Imu isn't shown, so Imu's condition after hitting Adam is unknown.

Omen: Imu's power

  • What it is called. 魔気 (Omen) — black flames that heal, empower and drain.
  • What it is said to be (1181). A power hidden in all things.
  • What Sommers says (1194). Omen is the counterpart of Conqueror's Haki. It's Sommers who says it, not Mihawk.

Full record: what is Omen?

How Imu talks

  • "I". Imu calls themself 「ムー」 — Mū.
  • "You". Imu calls others 「ヌシア」 — Nushia.

What the manga hasn't said

  • What Imu is. 1179's caption reportedly lists the power as 「アクマの実」 — Akuma no Mi written in katakana, not the usual 悪魔の実 for Devil Fruit. What that means hasn't been explained.
  • How Imu has lived 800 years. "One of the First Twenty" implies it, but no age is given.
  • Gender. Not stated on the page. Readers point to the title 聖 (Saint, used for male World Nobles) and Imu's look in 1179 — both inferences.
  • Joy Boy. The 1181 flashback shows them together. It doesn't say how it ended.
  • Vivi and Lili. Why Imu kept Vivi's photo, and what Imu wants with Lili.
  • Is Imu contracted to someone? A Japanese reading of 1191: the Imu contract theory.
  • Where Imu is now after 1193.
