Quick answer: what is Omen?

Omen (魔気, read オーメン) is the name attached to Imu's power in the Elbaf arc. It is recorded doing three things: striking as black flames, draining life at a distance, and powering up the subordinates Imu gives it to — including Sommers, who called the result "Super Sommers."

Chapter 1194 adds one line, and only one: Omen is the counterpart to Conqueror's Haki. It does not say how the two interact.

Evidence layers on this page. The chapter 1194 line is PRIMARY — MANGA VERIFIED, read directly from the official Japanese release on Shonen Jump+. Everything about Omen before 1194 is CHAPTER-REFERENCED: recorded from reference material and the chapter summaries behind our earlier Elbaf pieces, not re-read from the page for this article, and in most cases without a chapter locator. We do not invent locators we do not have.

What the Elbaf chapters have recorded — CHAPTER-REFERENCED

The name has been attached to Imu's power for a while: Japanese chapter coverage titles chapter 1180 with it. Across the arc, it is recorded in these forms:

  • Black-flame strikes. Homing black-flame projectiles, and "Omen volleys" in combat. In chapter 1191 one destroys Hajrudin's shield; Imu also blasts Zoro with it after countering King of Hell Three Sword Style.
  • A life-draining force. Recorded as withering trees at a distance and draining vitality, and as pinning an Emperor to a tree.
  • A power-up for subordinates. Imu grants it to his Knights. Sommers' version gave him flight, enormous strength and the Shepherd sword Gram, and he named it "Super Sommers" himself. Other Knights are recorded with an Omen buff as well.
  • It can be withstood. Jinbe blocks an Omen strike outright to shield Loki and Ragnir; Loki absorbs two direct Omen strikes and stays standing.

We have tracked these in the Elbaf ranking and the God's Knights ranking.

What that record does not include: a definition. The earlier chapters show what Omen does; as far as the material we have used goes, they do not say what it is — whether it is a kind of Haki, a Devil Fruit effect, part of the covenant, or something else.

What chapter 1194 adds — PRIMARY

In the middle of Zoro's fight with Sommers, Sommers reacts to one of Zoro's strikes: it's coated — Conqueror's Haki. The next panel carries one line:

"Don't be afraid — Omen is the power that stands as its counterpart."

The word is written 魔気 and glossed オーメン. The bubble has no tail; by the sequence, and given that Sommers runs on Imu's Omen buff, it reads as Sommers steadying himself. In the same panel, a black, dragon-headed mass meets Zoro's attack, with the technique call 「牙竜(キリュウ)」. The chapter does not say how 牙竜 relates to Omen — whether it is Omen itself or a technique that uses it.

What the line establishes: that, in this character's words, Omen and Conqueror's Haki are counterparts (対をなす力 — powers that form a pair).

What "counterpart" does not tell us

  • Which one wins. "Counterpart" is not "counter." The line does not say Omen beats, blocks or cancels Conqueror's Haki, or the reverse.
  • Whether Omen is Haki. A counterpart to Conqueror's Haki could be another kind of Haki or something else entirely; the line does not say.
  • Who else has it beyond Imu and those he empowers.
  • How it relates to the covenant that keeps the God's Knights regenerating.

How it fits what we already knew — THEORY

Our reading, not confirmed: the Elbaf arc has already established Conqueror's Haki as the specific counter to the God's Knights' immortality — see how their immortality breaks. If Omen is the power Imu hands those same Knights, then 1194's line — Omen as Conqueror's counterpart — reads as the chapter naming the two sides of that conflict. That is an interpretation of how two separate facts fit together; 1194 does not state it.

What to watch

ONE PIECE returns in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 46, on sale October 13. The evidence that would move this forward: a character stating what Omen is; a direct clash between Conqueror's Haki and Omen with a result on the page; or a statement of how 牙竜 relates to Omen.
