Quick answer: did Sanji get Conqueror's Haki?

The chapter doesn't say so, but it comes closer than any chapter yet. Nobody confirms that Sanji has it. The only person who raises it is Killingham, and he is guessing.

What 1197 does show:

  • His healing slows. Killingham's regeneration falls behind, and he can't explain why.
  • His suspicion. He wonders whether Sanji is coating his kicks with a little 〝覇王色〟, Conqueror's Haki, without knowing it.
  • His armour. He says only Conqueror's Haki can break his 〝魔気の鎧〟, his Omen armour.
  • The result. His spear breaks apart, and Sanji's last kick shatters his helmet.
  • Sanji's own word. He calls what he reached Armament Haki beyond all limits. He doesn't call it Conqueror's.

The chapter's last words are Sanji's: Zoro, you be Luffy's sword. I'll be his shield.

PRIMARY — MANGA VERIFIED. Read directly from the official Japanese release: chapter 1197「愛とは防御力」in Weekly Shonen Jump 2026 issue 49, published 2 November on Shonen Jump+. English wording is our paraphrase of the Japanese. Spoilers below.

The whole chapter is Sanji vs Killingham. Zoro and Luffy appear only as faces when Sanji speaks of them. Sommers, Brook, Gunko and the Owl's Library don't appear.

"Love is defence": what Sanji does with it

The title 「愛とは防御力」 is the lesson Ivankov gave him in chapter 1196. This chapter is Sanji finally using it.

The opening. Killingham mocks Sanji's last line from 1196 and asks what has happened to him in so short a time. Then he thrusts his spear, Longinus. Sanji flicks away his cigarette.

The idea. Sanji's answer is to defend by making his leg harder than anything else. He tells Ivankov, in his head, that Iva was right, and meets the spear with 〝魔神風脚〟, Ifrit Jambe.

What he admits:

  • He may have thought of this body as something dirty.
  • He wanted it dead, because dying was better than turning into scum like the Germa family one day.
  • Ivankov was the only one who noticed.

What he decides instead:

  • This body doesn't belong to Germa. Zeff trained it, and so did Kamabakka.
  • His late mother gave it to him. A flashback line from Sora calls him the child born with feelings, protected by her desperate resistance.
  • If he can't protect this body and these legs, what can he protect?

His conclusion: first of all, there is a body here worth protecting.

Killingham's healing slows

The fight turns on Sanji's new attack, 〝首肉要塞〟, Collier Fortress. He kicks Killingham in the neck, then does it again and again. The neck breaks each time.

Illustration: Killingham, a black-armoured centaur with long black hair, kneels in rubble staring in shock at his trembling hand while dark smoke rises from his wounds; far behind him Sanji stands calmly in the rain.

The first sign. Killingham, breathing hard, notices that he seems to be healing more slowly. He tells himself that a nobody like Sanji can't be using anything.

Sanji's plan. He has understood what Killingham told him about Conqueror's Haki. He says that, put simply, making Killingham want to die might work too. Killingham's reaction: what is this guy talking about?

The second sign. Killingham is now certain that his healing is slow, and he thinks Sanji hasn't noticed. His next thought: surely he isn't coating it, just a little? The panel ends on the word 〝覇王色〟.

Read that scene carefully. It is Killingham's private guess. Sanji doesn't say it, and the narration doesn't confirm it.

"Only Conqueror's Haki can break it"

Killingham pulls himself together. He complains about having his neck broken, and says he can't afford to lose after receiving 〝魔気〟, Omen, from the great one above him.

Then he gives Sanji some bad news: only Conqueror's Haki can break this Omen armour.

What happens next:

  1. Sanji's leg and the spear collide, and the blow tears through the town.
  2. The head of the spear breaks into pieces. Killingham looks shaken.
  3. Something cracks, and he is grinning again.
  4. Sanji's last kick lands. The ground splits, and his helmet shatters.

One detail to watch. Killingham's claim was about the armour, and the thing we see shatter is the helmet that is part of it. The chapter draws no line between the two, and it doesn't say what broke it.

What Sanji calls it

Sanji touches his leg and says 「成った」, it's done, or I've got it.

  • He felt no pain at all.
  • He took the blow, and it felt as if he had attacked.
  • His words for it: 〝度を超えた武装色〟, Armament Haki beyond all limits.
  • He says that right now he could probably crush a bullet.

So the two sides of the fight describe the same thing differently. Sanji says Armament. Killingham fears Conqueror's. The chapter leaves both standing.

"Be Luffy's sword"

Sanji speaks to Zoro, who isn't there:

「お前はルフィの…「剣」になれ…!!」 You be Luffy's "sword".

「おれがあいつの…「盾」になる!!!」 I'll be his "shield".

The second line lands on the same kick that breaks the helmet, and the chapter ends. The magazine's closing caption calls it the resolve of the two wings.

It also answers a question from Zoro's side of Elbaf. In chapter 1194 Sommers asked Zoro whether he could support a Yonko's captain like this. Here Sanji sets out both of their jobs.

What chapter 1197 does not show

  • Confirmation of Conqueror's Haki. Nobody states that Sanji has it.
  • Whether Killingham is beaten. The chapter ends on the kick. We don't see the result.
  • What is left of the armour. Only the helmet is shown breaking.
  • Zoro vs Sommers. Still no result from chapter 1195's strike.
  • Brook and Gunko, and the Owl's story of Lily. Neither appears.
  • Ivankov's "man". The chapter doesn't return to him.

THEORY — is this Conqueror's Haki?

For.

  • Killingham's healing slows, and Conqueror's Haki is the only shown answer to the God's Knights' regeneration.
  • He names only one thing that breaks his armour, and then a part of that armour breaks.
  • It matches how Zoro's case began: an effect first, and the name later.

Against.

  • Sanji's own word is Armament. He has no reason to know otherwise, but it is the only name the hero of the chapter gives it.
  • Killingham's statement is an enemy's claim, not a rule from the narration.
  • Love is defence is a lesson about defence, and the payoff on the page is a harder leg.

Our reading. The chapter is built so that readers will suspect it before Sanji does. That is still a THEORY until someone on the page confirms it.

Our Theory Radar before this chapter gave "Sanji awakens Conqueror's Haki in 1197" a 6 out of 10. That call isn't settled yet: the signs moved in its favour, and the confirmation didn't come.

When is ONE PIECE 1198?

There is no break note on the last page. The chapter ends with only the usual 「第1197話 おわり」.

The preview at the back of the issue lists ONE PIECE for Weekly Shonen Jump issue 50, on sale 9 November. Shonen Jump+ has been posting new issues at 00:00 Japan time on the day, so 1198 is expected then. Schedules can change.
