THEORY WATCH. No.420「遭遇」ends with Tserriednich naming two options out loud and admitting a third exists that he isn't taking yet. Zoom out from that one panel to the ship he's standing on, and a pattern shows up that Japanese and English-language readers have both spotted on their own: the last two ten-chapter batches moved in opposite directions, toward the same wall.
Nobody has confirmed they collide. Here is what is actually established, and what is still a guess.
The map, first
The Black Whale is built in five tiers, and the split is not subtle. Tier 1 houses the royal family, the fourteen princes, and — critically — the residences of the bosses of Kakin's three largest Mafia families. Tier 2 houses celebrities and the wealthy. A thick bulkhead separates Tier 2 from Tier 3, openable only from the Tier 2 side, for emergencies. Tiers 3 through 5 are general passenger decks, each one run by a different Mafia family — Heil-Ly on Tier 3, Xi-Yu on Tier 4, Cha-R on Tier 5 — and it is these lower tiers the Phantom Troupe has been moving through, using Mafia contacts, because they know Hisoka is somewhere on this ship and Chrollo wants his head.
That structure is not new to 420. It has been established across dozens of earlier chapters, and we are citing it as background rather than claiming to have re-verified it ourselves — the load-bearing detail below is the one thing 420 actually adds.
What 420 actually confirms
Read directly from Weekly Shonen Jump 2026 issue 41.
- Tserriednich and Hisoka are both in Tier 1 — the casino, specifically, resolving the question our own casino-placement theory left open in August.
- Tserriednich names two visible moves as the chapter ends: return to the 王子居住区 (the Princes' Residential District), or stay hidden in Tier 1 while his ability recharges.
- A third move exists that the page does not fully show. If he drops Zetsu now, he gets one more activation of Laplace's Demon — and taking that path, he says, still lets him "aim for his destination." The chapter does not say what that destination is. Two stated options, one unstated one.
- Hisoka assumed the Zetsu user in front of him might be Phantom Troupe. This is printed dialogue, not our inference — we read it directly in 420 and reported it in our coverage of the chapter's Kaiji reference. It is the one line in this chapter that puts the succession story and the Troupe hunt in the same sentence.
Confirmed by 420
- Tserriednich and Hisoka are both in Tier 1
- Tserriednich names two visible next moves
- A third move exists, tied to dropping Zetsu, that still reaches his destination
- Hisoka assumed a Zetsu user near him might be Phantom Troupe
Not confirmed by 420
- Which tier the Phantom Troupe is currently on
- Kurapika — 420 doesn't update his position or activity
- Whether the Heil-Ly Family's kill order is still active
- What Tserriednich's unstated destination actually is
What 420 does not tell you
Equally important, because the theory below depends on not filling these in.
- Where the Phantom Troupe currently is, tier by tier. Last confirmed movement has them working through the lower decks toward the top; nothing in 420 updates that.
- Kurapika. Chapter 420 does not update his position or activity — it simply never cuts back to his storyline.
- Whether the Heil-Ly Family's order to kill everyone aboard is still in effect. That is a live, unresolved plot thread from the lower tiers, and 420 is set entirely in Tier 1.
- What Tserriednich's real destination is, beyond "not his room, not hiding in place."
The pattern readers noticed
This is where the theory actually comes from, and it is worth being precise about its source. Japanese blogger misoichi, reviewing 420 the day it dropped, phrased it as a question rather than a prediction: chapters 401–410 followed the Phantom Troupe and Balsamilco moving from the ship's lower tiers toward the top; chapters 411–420 followed the princes — Tserriednich among them — moving from Tier 1 downward, toward the bulkhead. So does that make the next batch the one where the two finally collide?
The same shape shows up independently on the English side. A comment in a 421–430 predictions thread — unconnected to the Japanese post — reads: "this batch will be about the lower tiers mostly, since the 410s was about the princes." Another, in the same thread, goes further: "The Troupe's hunt is bound to violently smash right into Benjamin's military lockdown." Neither commenter is quoting the other; they arrived at the same read from opposite sides of the language gap. That is genuinely worth reporting.
It is also, on its own, a pattern of two — not a stated plan. We are treating it exactly that way.
Does the collision hold up?
Better than "readers hope so," worse than "confirmed."
What supports it: the bulkhead is real and it is the one hard physical wall in this story separating the succession war from the Troupe and Mafia plotlines. Hisoka's on-page suspicion that Tserriednich might be Troupe is a genuine textual seam between the two storylines, not a reader's stretch. And the batch-direction pattern held for two consecutive ten-chapter runs, independently noticed in two languages.
What doesn't: nobody — not Togashi, not the chapter, not any character — has stated that the next run heads toward a collision. Batches of two are not a trend; they are two data points. And the more specific version of this theory circulating in Japanese spaces — that Tserriednich's real goal is Tier 2 specifically, reached through one of several sealed connecting passages — describes detail we went looking for on the page and could not independently confirm ourselves. We are not printing it as fact on someone else's read alone.
Our position: the mechanism is real (a literal wall, a literal suspicion, a literal pattern), and the specific outcome is not. That is a stronger basis than most theories get, and it is still a theory.
What would actually confirm it
A panel showing a Phantom Troupe member, or Mafia muscle, on Tier 2 or Tier 1. A stated destination for Tserriednich, rather than an implied one. Or simply 421, whenever it runs, opening on the other side of that bulkhead.
Chapter 421 has no announced release date — we track that separately, and it will not move faster because this theory wants it to.
For the encounter that put Tserriednich and Hisoka in the same room, see Tserriednich appears to meet Hisoka in HUNTER×HUNTER 420. The Kaiji reference that confirms Hisoka's own Troupe suspicion is covered in HUNTER×HUNTER 420's Kaiji reference, and what Hisoka himself may have picked up on is broken down in did Hisoka detect Tserriednich's Nen beast? Where the wider Succession Contest stands is in the strongest Kakin princes ranked, and the chapter's release status is tracked at when will HUNTER×HUNTER 421 release?
No.420「遭遇」was read directly in Weekly Shonen Jump 2026 issue 41. Ship structure not established in that chapter is drawn from Hunterpedia and marked as background rather than re-verified fact; the batch-direction reading is attributed to named Japanese and English sources rather than presented as our own conclusion.
