There is no chapter-count answer to "how far is HUNTER×HUNTER from the Dark Continent," and anyone giving you one is guessing. What can be answered honestly is the route itself — and the route contains a twist most predictions skip past entirely: the ship reaching land is not the story reaching the Dark Continent. That gap is built into the plot on purpose.
The decoy, first
The Black Whale's stated destination is an island called the New Continent — and the New Continent is not the Dark Continent. It's an uninhabited island near the Far Ocean Boundary that the V6 nations are deliberately presenting to the public, and to the ship's general passengers, as the real thing. The actual Dark Continent lies past it, reachable only by a small group the public voyage was never meant to include.
The full stated plan, in order: the Black Whale lands at the New Continent, ending the voyage for the royal family and every general passenger. A small selected group — V6 nations, Beyond Netero, certain Hunter Association members, the IPA, Restricted Voyage Agencies — transfers to a ship owned by Morel Mackernasey. That ship travels to a location called the Gate, on the Far Ocean Boundary, to meet the Gatekeeper. A staging base is set up along the way for supplies and return transport. Only then does the actual Dark Continent exploration begin, led by Beyond, with the Gatekeeper's help.
Sourcing note, stated plainly rather than buried: we did not re-read chapters 342 and 359 ourselves for this piece. The route above is drawn from Hunterpedia's chapter-cited entries — reliable, sourced to specific chapters, but secondary. We're labelling it that way throughout rather than dressing it up as something we verified on the page.
What that means for "how close are we"
Reaching land is stage one of five. Most casual predictions — "once the ship arrives, the Dark Continent arc starts" — quietly conflate stage one with stage five. They're not the same milestone, and the manga itself is the one making that distinction, not us.
Sorting the current storylines against the route
This is the part worth being careful about, because it's easy to turn "these threads feel unresolved" into "these threads must resolve first" without actually checking.
Confirmed to continue past the New Continent, by design:
- Beyond Netero. He's held in a cell on Tier 1 for the duration of the voyage, and his own stated plan is to escape custody and act only once they're past the New Continent — his arc is explicitly built to straddle that checkpoint, not resolve before it.
- Ging and Pariston's team. Both left the Zodiacs to join Beyond's expedition directly, and they're already operating off the Black Whale entirely, in a separate location. Per their own dialogue, there is deliberately no plan to free Beyond early — he escapes alone, then meets them. Their storyline doesn't need the ship's plot to finish; it's positioned to converge at the same checkpoint Beyond is aiming for.
Strong inference — likely to resolve around the transition, not stated as required:
- The Succession Contest. Its entire premise is bound to the Black Whale voyage, and the general-passenger phase of that voyage structurally ends at the New Continent. That makes a resolution around the same point likely. Nothing in the material we're citing says the contest is required to end there — we're not turning a reasonable structural inference into a manga-stated rule.
- Phantom Troupe, Mafia, and Hisoka's current arc. Same shape, same caveat: ship-bound plots that plausibly wrap around the same checkpoint, without anything confirming it.
No canonical connection at all:
- Gyro. We read the live community discussion ourselves rather than assuming — Gyro is a Chimera Ant-arc character with no stated tie to the Dark Continent route whatsoever. He's connected, if anything, to a separate and currently dormant Gon/Killua thread. "Gyro on the Dark Continent" is a pairing English-language fans made up as a joke in the thread we read, not something the manga has stated. Worth being explicit about, because it's repeated often enough online to start sounding confirmed.
Genuinely required by the route
- Beyond Netero reaching / escaping past the New Continent
- The small expedition group (Ging, Pariston, others) rendezvousing with him
- The Gate and the Gatekeeper being reached
Not tied to it at all
- Gyro — no stated connection to the Dark Continent route
- Hisoka's personal trajectory past the ship
- Any specific chapter count — none has been given
What we're not doing here
Not predicting a chapter count. Not treating "the Succession Contest is ship-bound" as proof it must conclude by a specific point. Not importing the Beyond-family conspiracy material into this piece — it's real and it's interesting, but it isn't load-bearing for the question this article actually answers, so it stays out rather than getting stretched to fit.
The honest shape of the answer: one stage of five is behind the story. Two threads (Beyond, and Ging/Pariston's team) are confirmed by their own stated plans to carry past the checkpoint everyone's watching. The rest is a reasonable bet on timing, not a countdown.
For the ship's own tier structure and how it separates the current storylines physically, see where does Tserriednich go after 420? The Black Whale's storylines may be about to collide. For the succession war's own scoreboard, see the strongest Kakin princes ranked. Chapter 421's release date is tracked separately, and staying unannounced doesn't change anything above — see when will HUNTER×HUNTER 421 release?
The Black Whale's route (chapters 342, 359) is cited through Hunterpedia's chapter-referenced entries rather than re-read by us directly — flagged throughout rather than presented as page-verified. The Gyro fan-pairing claim was checked directly against live community discussion, not assumed. We will revisit the route-facts sourcing if the underlying volumes become accessible without a paid purchase we haven't authorized.
