THEORY WATCH. The most argued-over moment in No.420「遭遇」is four panels long and contains no dialogue from the person doing it. Hisoka looks up. Then Tserriednich, hidden in Zetsu, panics that his Nen beast has been noticed.

Between those two beats the chapter shows you a great deal and tells you nothing. We read No.420 directly in Weekly Shonen Jump 2026 issue 41 to separate the two.

The same three-tier ladder: five printed facts, one inference, five unconfirmed theories.

What is actually printed

Five things, all on the page.

  1. Hisoka weighs killing him and declines. 「王子殺し…響きは悪くない…♣」 — prince-killer, that has a decent ring to it — immediately followed by 「ケド この人達 殺ったところでゾクゾクする訳でもないし…◆」, that killing these people would not be a thrill.
  2. He looks up. Head tilted back, a 「……」 bubble, among the machines. Nothing is drawn in the space he is looking at. The panel gives you his posture and an empty ceiling.
  3. A pale halo is traced around his head and shoulders in a later panel, seen from behind as he turns. It is not labelled, and it is not concentrated anywhere in particular.
  4. His eyes catch light. A close-up in near-total darkness, a band of light crossing both eyes. No technique is named.
  5. Tserriednich panics. 「まさか…オレの念獣(ネンじゅう)に気付いた…?」 — don't tell me he noticed my Nen beast — then talks himself down in three beats: impossible, an ability the opponent can perceive would be worthless, there is no way it can be seen.

Then Hisoka walks away.

What the chapter never does: say that Hisoka saw anything, name what he looked at, or print the word 凝. Both of the most repeated claims in the discussion — he used Gyo and he saw the Nen beast — are absent from the page.

The one inference worth making

Something registered. That much is fair. A man who has just decided his target is not worth killing does not stop and look up at nothing for a panel, and Togashi does not spend the halo panel on a character who noticed nothing.

But note carefully what that inference does and does not carry. It says Hisoka reacted. It does not say he reacted to the Nen beast, and it does not say he identified anything. The chapter draws the reaction and withholds the cause, which is a deliberate structure, not an oversight.

Five explanations

1 — He used Gyo and saw the beast. The most popular reading, and the weakest-supported. Gyo concentrates aura in the eyes; the halo the chapter actually draws sits around his head and shoulders, which is not the same picture. The eye close-up is lit, not aura'd. This reading requires the panel to be doing something the panel does not show.

What the eye panel shows

  • Near-total darkness, face lit from one side
  • A band of light crossing both eyes
  • No technique named anywhere on the page
  • The separate halo sits on head and shoulders

What it would need to show for Gyo

  • Aura concentrated at the eyes specifically
  • The word 凝, or a character naming it
  • Something becoming visible that was not before
  • Some indication of what he is looking at

2 — He felt the aura being spent, not the beast. Laplace's Demon runs on a Nen beast, and 420 establishes it burns charge at a rate Tserriednich puts near 23:1. Aura being consumed at that rate near a Floor Master is a plausible thing to feel without seeing anything. This explains the empty panel neatly: there was nothing to see, only something to sense.

3 — He crossed the boundary. The ability has a stated radius of roughly 36 metres. Walking through the edge of a field is a different sensation from standing inside it, and Hisoka moves through the space during the encounter. Attractive, but the chapter has never described the boundary as something perceptible from outside.

4 — He caught the residue of a Zetsu. Hisoka has form here: in chapter 170 he located Kalluto through a Zetsu described as flawless, by feel. That is the strongest precedent on this list, and it needs no Nen beast at all — it only needs Tserriednich to be a person standing very still where no person should be.

5 — His own Nen met something. The Reddit reading: Bungee Gum, already extended in the space, touching a boundary or a body that should not be there. Elegant, and completely unevidenced — the chapter does not show him using it.

Does this expose a third weakness?

Here is why the argument matters beyond the panel.

420 already gave Laplace's Demon two hard limits: a charge Tserriednich estimates at 23:1 with almost nothing left, and a sub-0.1-second Zetsu he does not have. Both are about capacity.

If a strong enough opponent can sense the ability running — by any of the routes above — that is a limit of a different kind. Tserriednich says it himself: 「それが相手にわかったら全く無意味な能力だ!!」 — if the opponent can tell, the ability is completely meaningless. He raises the possibility specifically because it would gut the power, and the chapter leaves him unable to rule it out.

We are labelling that THEORY, firmly. Nothing establishes that Hisoka perceived the ability, and one character's fear is not a mechanic. But it is the question 421 would have to answer, and it is a sharper question than "who wins".

What would settle it

A single line from Hisoka would end the argument, and he does not get one in this chapter — the closest thing is his verdict that these people would not be a thrill, delivered before he looks up.

Short of that: the ability being used on him again, with the reaction shown from his side; or any character stating what a Nen beast of this type looks like to an outside observer. Until then, the honest position is that Hisoka reacted to something the chapter declined to name.

For the encounter itself and the limits 420 puts on the ability, see Tserriednich appears to meet Hisoka in HUNTER×HUNTER 420. The ability's rules are broken down in HUNTER×HUNTER finally names Tserriednich's ability, and the matchup in can Tserriednich beat Hisoka?. When 421 arrives is still unannounced.
