Who Has Future Sight in ONE PIECE — and Does Kaido Really Have It?

Five characters have been shown or stated to see the future in ONE PIECE: Katakuri, Luffy, Kaido, Shanks and Gaban. Here is the chapter behind each one, how strong that evidence actually is, and why a future that gets seen can still be changed.

Quick answer

Five characters in ONE PIECE have been shown or stated to see the future: Charlotte Katakuri, Monkey D. Luffy, Kaido, Shanks and Scopper Gaban.

They are not equally well evidenced, and this page does not pretend otherwise — each entry below carries its own evidence level. Two of them, Kaido and Shanks, rest on chapters we have verified directly. The other three rest on chapter-referenced logs we have not re-read from the page in this session, and we say so in place rather than rounding them up.

The single most useful thing the manga has established about the ability is not who has it. It is that a future someone sees can still be changed — which is why "he saw it coming" and "it happened" are different statements.

What Future Sight actually is

It is not a separate power. It is an advanced application of Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku Haki), the sense that reads presence, emotion and intent. Pushed far enough, it extends slightly forward in time, so the user perceives a moment before it arrives.

Three properties matter for reading any scene involving it:

  • It is short-range in time. Nothing in the manga presents it as long-term prophecy. It is measured in moments, not chapters.
  • Seeing is not surviving. A user can see an attack arriving and still be unable to avoid it. The ability supplies information, not capability.
  • It is trainable. The manga shows it being acquired, which is why Luffy is on this list at all.

That last point is also the cleanest argument against treating it as a mystical gift. It behaves like a skill.

The five, with the evidence behind each

Charlotte Katakuri — first confirmed around chapter 860

  • Exact evidence: Katakuri's Observation Haki is presented as seeing a short distance into the future, and the Whole Cake Island fight is built around that advantage.
  • What the scene proves: possession, and that the ability confers a decisive combat edge against an opponent who lacks it.
  • Evidence level: CHAPTER-REFERENCED / NOT DIRECTLY REVERIFIED IN THIS SESSION.
  • Overclaim to avoid: Do not merge this with the separate Whole Cake sequence involving a shot aimed at Sanji. Those get blended constantly in explainer lists, and they are different scenes making different points.

Monkey D. Luffy — first confirmed around chapter 894

  • Exact evidence: Luffy develops the same forward-reading ability over the course of the Katakuri fight, having started it without.
  • What the scene proves: the most important structural fact on this page — that future sight is learnable. Every other entry is a character who has it; this is the one that shows it being acquired.
  • Evidence level: CHAPTER-REFERENCED / NOT DIRECTLY REVERIFIED IN THIS SESSION.
  • Overclaim to avoid: Do not describe Luffy as matching Katakuri's range or reliability on the strength of acquiring it.

Kaido — chapter 1042, volume 103

  • Exact evidence: Kaido says in his own words that Luffy is not the only one who can see the future.
  • What the scene proves: possession, stated by the character himself. A first-person statement by a combatant of Kaido's standing is strong evidence for having the ability.
  • Evidence level: PRIMARY — MANGA VERIFIED.
  • Overclaim to avoid: Do not treat the attack that immediately follows as a demonstrated product of future sight. The line establishes that he has it; it does not label the next blow as an application of it.

Shanks — chapter 1079, volume 107

  • Exact evidence: Shanks sees a future in which Eustass Kid's Damned Punk inflicts severe damage. He acts before it fires — warning his fleet, crossing to Kid's ship, and ending the fight with Kamusari. That future does not occur.
  • What the scene proves: more than possession. It is the clearest demonstration in the manga of the ability's actual function: information early enough to act on.
  • Evidence level: PRIMARY — MANGA VERIFIED.
  • Overclaim to avoid: Do not describe the Damned Punk damage as something that happened. It is a future he saw and then prevented. Also keep the techniques straight: 神避 Kamusari is Shanks; 覇国 Hakoku is Dorry and Brogy. Our breakdown of Shanks' strongest attack separates those layers in detail.

Scopper Gaban — chapter 1149, volume 113

  • Exact evidence: Gaban asks for a second. A blade is closing on Colon. He is shown a future, and then drops his weapon and surrenders.
  • What the scene proves: on the frozen investigation log, a decision changed by something seen. What the log does not yet settle is whether the vision is framed as Gaban's viewpoint, whether the future outcome is actually drawn, and how far the chapter goes toward naming the ability.
  • Evidence level: CHAPTER-REFERENCED / NOT DIRECTLY REVERIFIED IN THIS SESSION.
  • Overclaim to avoid: Do not present Gaban's entry at the same confidence as Kaido's or Shanks'. And a correction worth carrying: the scene around page 98 involving Brook, a young girl and「お父さま」is Gunko-side past memory, not Gaban future sight. It appears in Gaban discussions and does not belong there.

The most important rule: a seen future can be changed

This is where most Future Sight explanations go wrong, and chapter 1079 settles it cleanly.

Shanks saw a future containing serious damage. He then changed what he was doing, and the damage did not occur. The vision was accurate as a projection and false as a prediction, because it was acted on.

That gives a rule for reading every scene on this list: what a character sees is a branch, not a record. It tells you what happens if nothing changes. The moment the viewer acts on it, the thing they saw may never exist.

It also creates a specific reporting trap. A vision panel is a drawing of an event, and it is easy to summarise it as the event. Writing "Kid's Damned Punk devastated Shanks' fleet" from chapter 1079 describes something that the chapter explicitly shows not happening. We treat vision panels as visions, every time.

Future Sight has limits

Listing five users invites the conclusion that these five are untouchable. The manga does not support that.

  • The window is short. Moments of warning, not strategic foreknowledge.
  • Seeing does not mean stopping. Katakuri's fight is the proof: the advantage is real and it is not absolute, because an opponent who improves enough can close the gap.
  • It can be learned, so it can be matched. Luffy's arc is the demonstration.
  • It says nothing about durability or output. A user who sees an attack and cannot survive it is still hit.

The honest summary is that future sight is a very strong information advantage with a hard ceiling, not a win condition.

"Strong Observation Haki" is not the same claim

Future sight is an advanced application of Observation Haki. It does not follow that every strong Observation Haki user has it.

The two claims need different evidence:

  • Strong Observation Haki is supported by feats of range, sensitivity or precision.
  • Confirmed future sight needs the manga to show or state a character perceiving a moment before it happens.

A character can be outstanding at the first and have no evidence for the second. This is the distinction our Haki rankings keep between possession and demonstrated application, and it is the reason this list is five names rather than fifteen.

We also deliberately kept this page to one evidence layer — the serialised manga. Official supplementary material exists that bears on future sight, including an advanced Conqueror's Haki application attributed to Shanks that would suppress an opponent's ability to read him. It is official, not fan invention, but it has never been demonstrated in a chapter, so mixing it into a confirmed-users list would quietly change what "confirmed" means here.

What is actually confirmed

CONFIRMED FACT:

  • Future sight is an advanced application of Observation Haki, not a separate power.
  • Kaido states that Luffy is not the only one who can see the future (ch. 1042).
  • Shanks sees a future, acts on it, and prevents it (ch. 1079).
  • Katakuri has the ability and Luffy acquires it during their fight.

PLAUSIBLE INTERPRETATION:

  • Gaban's surrender in ch. 1149 is a decision changed by a vision.
  • The ability's window is consistently short across every depiction.

NOT CONFIRMED:

  • Any stated range, duration or reliability figure for any user.
  • That strong Observation Haki implies future sight.
  • That Sanji, or any other candidate, belongs on the confirmed list.

FAQ

Who can see the future in ONE PIECE? Katakuri, Luffy, Kaido, Shanks and Scopper Gaban, on the evidence currently available. Kaido's and Shanks' entries are the best supported.

Does Sanji have Future Sight? Not as a confirmed user. Sanji's Observation Haki is strong and there are scenes fans read as forward perception, but we do not treat him as explicitly confirmed, and he is not on the list above. If a chapter shows or states it plainly, that changes.

Can the future be changed once it is seen? Yes, and chapter 1079 is the clearest example: Shanks saw the damage Kid's attack would cause and prevented it from happening at all.

Is Future Sight a Devil Fruit power? No. It is Observation Haki pushed to an advanced level, and the manga shows it being learned.

Why are some entries marked chapter-referenced? Because we have not re-read those specific panels from the official release in this session. Katakuri (ch. 860), Luffy (ch. 894) and Gaban (ch. 1149) are back-catalogue volumes we could not open without a paid rental. We would rather label the gap than quietly present all five at the same confidence.

Who is the strongest Future Sight user? The manga does not rank them, and we are not going to invent one. Shanks has the clearest demonstration of the ability being used to change an outcome; that is a statement about the scene, not a tier placement.
